Up to this section, we have been working at 4/4. From now on, we shall go on to other measures. There is a method of Bob Moses’s which I have found extremely useful for an understanding of this kind of measures: Bob Moses called it “reference points”. And music is full of them. I think it is basic to understand where these points are, so as to understand and assimilate the music that we are playing. It was Bobby Sanabria who taught me this pattern at the Drummer Collective. It’s one of the typical rhythms of Afro-Cuban music, and very interesting for working on polyrhythms.
