This exercise consists of 4 parts. Work with both hands (R-L or L-R) on the snare for the first 2 bars, then accenting with bass drum (BD) and cymbal (Cym) in the next 2 bars. The HiHat is always on quarter notes. Bar 1 – Right hand and left hand accent first eighth note of each beat Bar 2 – Right hand and left hand accent second eighth note of each beat Bar 3 – Right hand and left hand accent first eighth note with bass drum and cymbal Bar 4 – Right hand and left hand accent second eighth note with bass drum and cymbal
Eighth notes are very familiar figures and most of you are certain to recognise them when you hear them, but you should practise them carefully anyway, since they are perhaps one of the figures that you will play most often in your career. Accents are parameters that allow us to transmit sensations, what is known as “musicality”. From here on, you will be playing your strokes with accentuation. This is the first step towards infusing your style of playing with expression.
