Description

This exercise consists of 6 parts. Work with both hands (R-L or L-R) on the snare for the first 3 bars, then accenting with bass drum (BD) and cymbal (Cym) in the next 3 bars. The HiHat is always on quarter notes. Bar 1 – Right hand and left hand accent first and second eighth notes of the triplet per beat Bar 2 – Right hand and left hand accent second and third eighth notes of the triplet per beat Bar 3 – Right hand and left hand accent third and first eighth notes of the triplet per beat Bar 4 – Right hand and left hand accent first and second eighth notes of the triplet with BD and Cym Bar 5 – Right hand and left hand accent second and third eighth notes of the triplet with BD and Cym Bar 6 – Right hand and left hand accent third and first eighth notes of the triplet with BD and Cym

 

Commentary:

This exercise will help you to gain very good control of eighth note triplets and their application. There is a general tendency to accent the first stroke of each figure, since it coincides with the beat. This is a serious error and leads to rhythmic restriction of the instrumentalist. Work on this exercise with confidence and you will find that when playing “ternary” music styles, the simple fact of mastering all possible accents will help you play with greater fluency.
