Welcome to the Virtual Drummer School. I feel very pleased to be here with all of you guys and to talk about rhythm and drumming, and specially about Afro-Cuban music which has the same subdivisions, for example, as American music. If we take into consideration that all the funk music or rock is usually in 4/4 with an eighth notes subdivision, like a very even rhythms like 1, 2, 3, 4, … . So that will be for example the same on the subdivision of all the Afro-Cuban rhythms that I strike 4/4, and then, we have the subdivision in triplets that is for example the same subdivision as the blues as 1, 2, 3, 4, … As the words say, each beat is divided in triplets, so let’s try this with a clip track. Use this 2 subdivisions that are the first thing, the very first thing that we have to have really clear to be able to get into the “Claves” and the different Afro-Cuban rhythms.
