Description

Here you have an explanation of what a “Shekere” is, how it is made and how to hold it in your hands. Also, Giovanni shows you the first “Guaguancó” pattern.

Commentary:

Now this is a Shekere. The original Shekere is a gord that comes from a tree. Now we have the facilities to make a mould made of fiber glass, right? And you do, the fiber glass güiro, you can get the sound, but it is not the same, as the natural gord; but you can use it, you can record with it, you can play in many many places, many things you can do with it, ok? In Guaguancó, groups like Los Muñequitos de Matanza from Cuba, Los Papines, etc., etc…. Irakere, from Puerto Rico Bata Kumbele, right? The group Saperoco, and now many others, used this pattern 1, 2, 3, 4… OK? With the movement that you do, that is like this, down, up, down, up, down. OK?…
