Description

: This exercise consists of 8 parts. Work with both hands (R-L or L-R) on the snare for the first four bars, then accenting with bass drum (BD) and cymbal (Cym) in the next four bars. The HiHat is always on quarter notes. Bar 1 – Right hand and left hand accent first quarter note Bar 2 – Right hand and left hand accent second quarter note Bar 3 – Right hand and left hand accent third quarter note Bar 4 – Right hand and left hand accent fourth quarter note Bar 5 – Right hand and left hand accent first quarter note with bass drum and cymbal Bar 6 – Right hand and left hand accent second quarter note with bass drum and cymbal Bar 7 – Right hand and left hand accent third quarter note with bass drum and cymbal Bar 8 – Right hand and left hand accent fourth quarter note with bass drum and cymbal

 

Commentary:

In the other exercises so far you have not used accents; those exercises were flat and had a mechanical sound, without expression. Imagine speaking without accenting any of the words; it would be difficult to communicate sensations, states of mind, etc. The same is true of music: accents are parameters that allow us to transmit sensations, what is known as “musicality”. From here on, you will be playing your strokes with accentuation. This is the first step towards infusing your style of playing with expression.
