Description

This exercise has 16 parts: work with both hands (R-L or L-R), one stroke by each, and the HiHat always on quarter notes. Line 1 – Quintuplets Line 2 – Quarter notes Line 3 – Quintuplets Line 4 – Quarter note triplets Line 5 – Quintuplets Line 6 – Eighth notes Line 7 – Quintuplets Line 8 – Eighth note triplets Line 9 – Quintuplets Line 10 – Sixteenth notes Line 11 – Quintuplets Line 12 – Sextuplets Line 13 – Quintuplets Line 14 – Septuplets Line 15 – Quintuplets Line 16 – Thirty-second notes

 

Commentary:

Some students ask me if this kind of figure is ever used and I always tell them that it forms part of the musical language and so has to be mastered, in addition to helping to control the other figures. Many drummers use this kind of figure to very good effect in their breaks, so you should practise it with as much dedication as the other figures.
