Description

This exercise consists of 2 parts. In the first part work with the right hand (R) on the cymbal, left hand (L) on the snare (SN), and bass drum (BD). The HiHat is always on quarter notes. In the second part, do the same with reversed hands. Bar 1 – Right hand plays all eighth notes on cymbal (Cym). Left hand plays fourth and eighth beats in the bar on snare (SN). Bass drum plays second and sixth eighth notes in the bar. HiHat plays all quarter notes. Bar 2 – Left hand plays all eighth notes on cymbal (Cym). Right hand plays second and fourth beats in the bar on snare (SN). Bass drum plays second and sixth eighth notes in the bar. HiHat plays all quarter notes.

 

Commentary:

Look closely at this exercise. What you are doing here is what is known as displacing eighth notes. Your snare (SN) and your bass drum (BD) play the second eighth notes of each quarter note. Work on the different combinations to avoid falling into the bad habit of always playing patterns the same way. This will enrich your rhythmic sense and expand your vocabulary so that you can infuse your own rhythmic tastes into any piece by whatever group you are playing with.
